July
Khmer in Lowell
July 8-30, 2025
Reception: Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at 5:30 PM
Please note: “Khmer in Lowell” is on view during Folk Festival! Step inside the City Hall lobby on Saturday, July 26th from 12-5 PM and Sunday, July 27th from 12-4 PM to discover the art, history, and culture of the Lowell Khmer population.
In Spring 2025, UMass Lowell offered a special course entitled “Cambodian Culture in Lowell,” taught by Dr. Christine Su, Visiting Faculty of Southeast Asian History and Asian American Studies. The course both provided an overview of Cambodia’s history and examined the emergence and growth of the Khmer (Cambodian) community in the U.S., with a focus on Lowell, from the early 1980s to the present.
The year 2025 marks 50 years of Cambodian presence in the U.S., beginning with the first immigrants and refugees in 1975. Thus, a major component of the course involved student contributions to a “Khmer in Lowell” exhibit, one of several events and programs hosted as part of “Proleung Khmer: A 50-Year Journey of Remembrance and Resilience” (www.proleungkhmer.org). The exhibit was first hosted at Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios for the month of May. The City of Lowell is delighted to host the exhibit here at City Hall to continue to provide awareness about the Khmer community in Lowell.
Students conducted semi-structured interviews with members of the Khmer community, focusing on their lives in Lowell. Portraits of the interviewees appear here in the exhibit, along with a quote from their interviews. Additionally, students researched historical information, mapped the locations and resources in Cambodia Town, and created original artwork for the exhibit. The oral histories and related information gathered will be shared as part of the Southeast Asian Digital Archive (SEADA) at UMass Lowell (www.uml.edu/research/sea-digital-archive/).
